Being black is a little hard, you can get mistreated for how you look. Who would think celebrities go through these things too, well Nadia Nakai's recent experience shows that celebrities are no exception to racial discrimination.
Nadia Nakai went to London to go and get the idea of trends that have been established there that would reflect in South African markets later in the year in terms of fashion as she was about to launch her Bragga X Redbat collection. This was suppose to be one of her greatest experiences as she is the first female rapper to collaborate with Redbat and Sport Scene on a clothing line. Everything was going well until they went into one store and it is safe to say things did not end well.
She walked into the store looking fine and stylish as always, where she was wearing short grey tights and and a grey hooded sweater, when she describes it she says that she walked into the shop with a hood on her head. It was not long before a woman who works in the store walked up to to her and instructed her to to take off the hoodie because the camera needed to see her face, so she went to her friend who they were doing the shopping with to tell him what she had just been told by the lady who works at the store.
The whole situation did not treat the friend well, he took to his power to go and resolve the situation with an assumption that Bragga is being discriminated against because there were other people in store who were wearing caps, hijabs and all of that but she is the only one who is asked to take off her hood. The conclusion was that the lady assumed that Nadia could have been there to do something suspicious in the store other than to shop simply because she is a black person with a hoodie on.
This made Nadia Nakai realize that what she had been seeing on the media does in actual fact happen everyday and it did not seat well with her. According to Nadia the lady who came up to her was not even white, she looked mixed which means she could be described black and possibly knows the struggle of being non‐white. This experience was unpleasant for Nadia and she said she was never gonna go back to that store ever again.
This was not the first time our black celebrity got mistreated in other countries because of their skin color and how they looked, do you remember the Moon Child situation? Moon Child was accused of possessing drugs at a Tanzanian airport because of how she chose to style her hair, her big blue African hairstyle led the security guards at the airport to assume that she had drugs on her, not only that they took it as far as harassing her and trying to take her phone as was heard in the video that she recorded while this incident was happening.
It is very sad to see these things happening but we are glad that people with bigger platforms are shinning the light on these things.
